Louie is indeed a lucky boy!
We got a call from the original owner of Louie several months before we actually picked him up. He had been purchased from a breeder to be used as an LGD (Livestock Guardian Dog). He was put out into the barn at 5 weeks old....and after a couple of months of interacting with the livestock (but not really knowing "what" to do, since he had no training) the owner was frustrated by his behavior and decided to give him up.
Since Louie had not been around people very much (never leaving the farm since he got there) his social skills were lacking and he was very shy. At some point he must have come into contact with some rather mean children as he still doesn't like them now.
The owner had reported that this dog had been aggressive to her husband. We had our doubts about whether he would be placeable or not. We picked him up and took him to the vet for evaluation. The vet walked in to find Louie laying with his head in Randy's lap....not sure what was happening.
They didn't see the aggressive, completely shy, uncontrollable dog that the owner had reported.....so they decided to give Louie a chance. He was neutered and brought up to dated on all his shots and put into foster care. As it turned out, the only foster home available had a small child in the home. This was a concern at the begining but worked out to be a blessing.
Louie first came to trust his foster mom...then his two foster sister's...one human the other another pyr.
Louie stayed in foster care for several weeks all the while working on trusting those he came into contact with. Then he found his family!
As it turned out Ed and Elisa had just lost their beloved Pyr of many years and were willing to take on another "project". Louie was very shy with both of them at first...but since going home with them has learned to trust them and even has fun at 9pm at night (when he comes alive) playing!
Ed and Elisa have done a wonderful job so far but it will take many many months for Louie to feel completely at ease with strangers. In the meantime he is loved and goes where he can when he can...and is happy to be alive!
